U.S. Manufacturing
Where does the U.S. Currently Stand in Manufacturing
As of the most recent 2010 reports the U.S. holds the forth position after China, India, and Korea in the competitive index. However, we still hold the first position as the largest manufacturing economy by producing 20% of the world’s manufactured outputs, while china holds 12%.
One reason stated for the current low U.S. manufacturing position is that the U.S. has a skewed perception that we can rely on service industries alone, without a substantial U.S. manufacturing industry.
Another reason for the current condition of U.S. manufacturing condition is that our country as a whole has not developed a defined national policy on manufacturing competitiveness.
While many would like to see the government continue to bailout and supply grants to companies in order to keep them alive, it is seem more important to attack these two main issues. The first issue needs to be addressed by the manufacturer, and the second by the government.
U.S. Manufacturing is what has brought the U.S. to the powerful position of where it is today. If we are to let that slip through our hands to foreign countries we are in a sense handing over the power that has made us who we are.

The Constitution and Manufacturing
The way the US Govt. has embraced globalization has hit US manufacturing hard. Competing with countries with lower wages, tax breaks, low govt. support for those at home and the 100+ years of regulations puts the home team in the corner. Our Govt. seems to support many companies that wish to move as much of their business overseas as possible even sometimes assisting them with tax breaks while leaving thousands of unemployed Americans behind to pick up the pieces while the same Corporations hide their profits off shore. To the common American it's an abhorrent practice that is truly unbelievable. We lack balance.
Yet at the same time, our Govt. will send our troops overseas then rent thousands of non-US spec vehicles for them to drive while abroad. Build housing for them that does not meet US codes. Hire third world workers to work in their chow halls and in other areas so they don't have to pay US wages. There is a huge double standard. The Govt. forces those of us at home to do things they themselves do not do abroad. See a trend developing here?
There was a time when the US fought a war over slavery and buried it. Or did we? Perhaps our modern definition of slavery needs to be updated. What is the difference between hiring someone overseas for such a low wage that they have no hope of any kind of a life or education and locking someone up in the backyard? Both forms of slavery do the same thing- increase profits for those in control.
I'd like to see the US Constitution and what it stands for fully applied to all of our nations dealings overseas. Our Govt. currently seems to pick and chose which tenants of the Constitution it applies to suit it's goals at the time.
If the US Constitution is the foundation of our Govt. and the ultimate guidance for their actions then shouldn't it be applied equally both at home and abroad? I feel the lack of support for this basic concept has led us to the point we are at today with greed driving some of our foreign policies instead of the Constitution. I'd say we'd all be better off, not just in American manufacturing, if we were to raise people up to the standards of the Constitution and not lower it just for the sake of profit. Lets get some balance and common sense back. The rest will follow.
