Rapid Prototyping

What is Rapid Prototyping?

Rapid Prototyping is an additive process; traditionally a prototype was made using expensive and time consuming subtractive processes such as machining.  Rapid Prototyping can be done with only a CAD drawing.  The benefit to a rapid prototyping is that it can allow the product development team to test for fit, function, form, size, and appearance quickly and with little cost compared to other methods.

What is the benefit to rapid prototyping?

The largest benefit to using rapid prototyping in your product development is that the process does not require special tooling or mold making.  You can create a part at a fixed hourly price regardless of how complicated or intricate the design.  It is generally accepted that the rapid prototype prototyping process will reduce product development time, and allow for products to reach the market sooner.  The benefit to a rapid prototyping is that it can allow the product development team to test for fit, function, form, size, and appearance quickly and with little cost compared to other methods.

What is needed to create a rapid prototype?

Most companies will create a 3D CAD drawing while in the product development stages, this file can be sent directly to a rapid prototype company.  The industry standard is usually an STL format file, most CAD softwares will allow your part to be saved into this format.  They will then take that file and convert it to the format their rapid prototype machines will use and can create the part from that CAM file.  The simplicity of the process is another benefit to rapid prototyping; you can have a physical model before you even begin to think about the manufacturing processes.

How do I get a quote on Contract Auction?

To get an accurate quote on Contract Auction you will need a 3D CAD file; it can be uploaded to your listing so that manufacturers can view it.  If you are worried about confidentiality you can use the NDA or you may describe the project in detail and contact manufacturers privately to send the CAD file.
