Find a Clothing Manufacturer

Finding a clothing manufacturer is an important step in your startup clothing business.  Many people want to start a clothing line, but do not go through the steps to get connected to the right manufacturer.

When choosing a clothing or textile manufacturer, you must decide if you want to go with an overseas shop or stay in the United States.  There are pros and cons to both, but staying US based has many great benefits for you as the distributor/designer, as well as bolstering the economy and the manufacturing industry.  Another benefit in staying US based is that the patents are protected and patent laws are enforced in the US better than anywhere else.

After choosing whether to stay US based or overseas, you will want to get a prototype for your product.  This can be a long and difficult process.  If you find a clothing manufacturer that is familiar with the kind of work you are looking for, the headache in this process is greatly reduced.  Often, manufacturers will request a sample of something purchased off the rack that resembles the fit you desire.  They will adjust it according to your request and they will send the product back and forth until all of the modifications have been completed and you are happy with your product.

You must evaluate the scale of the business and the distribution channels that you will be using.  This is very important in manufacturing, because the quantity you order will greatly affect the price per piece you pay.  It may make sense to manufacture yourself in the beginning, depending on the product, your expertise and the tools required.  Many manufacturers require a minimum order of 500-1000.  You may find other manufacturers willing to do orders of less, but the price per piece will most likely be more.

Most professionals will advise to get referrals, or go with a reputable manufacturer.  You may also use a consultant firm or a web-based marketplace that connects manufacturers to buyers.
