Contract Manufacturing

What is Contract Manufacturing?

Most large products today are not produced by a single manufacturer.  Large companies, such as automobile manufacturers and large engineering manufacturers, will outsource many of the different components of a single product.  This process is referred to as contract manufacturing and it is a very large portion of small business manufacturing.

If you are a small manufacturing company and are wondering how you can take your business to the next level, then this is what you are looking for.

Who uses a Contract Manufacturer?

Most large manufacturing companies have outsourced thousands of parts to many different companies, and are almost always looking for a new company that can do it for less, or better quality.  This means that most companies are constantly looking for contract manufacturers.

To the business owner, this means that there is always new contract manufacturing work available.  It also means that once the contract finishes you will need to ensure you will be picked for the next contract.  While much of the contract manufacturing is being done overseas, there are still billions of dollars worth of contract work to be done within the US; it is just a matter of knowing your competition and being creative in your bidding process.  Also, many large corporations will only work with US contract manufacturers due to public relations and government regulations.

Tricks to Get New Contract Manufacturing Work

If you want to be a contract manufacturer, there are a few things you should know.  It is a common misconception among business owners that big businesses have all the information and the most cutting edge technology.  While this is true in some situations, there are many ways in which the small businesses can be beneficial to the larger corporations.  It can be a strong point for your company if you are able to offer sound advice, and design modifications that they would otherwise be unable to achieve.

Often times, creativity can be stifled in larger companies do to regulations, and standard operating procedures.  The contract manufacturer is usually more knowledgeable about the specific part being manufactured.  While larger corporations are capable of great technological advancements, most often it is the culmination of many smaller contract manufacturers’ ideas that are combined to create a single product.
